Complete Game Notes
Indiana is in the midst of a six-game homestand, when they welcome No. 23 Louisville and Evansville to the IU Softball Field this week. The games also mark the first of the midweek games of the year. They are playing a pair of midweek games because the Hoosiers will be off this weekend, as the Big Ten season begins for the other 10 teams and Indiana received the bye.
Louisville went 4-1 at the prestigious Judy Garmin Tournament in Fullerton, Calif., this past weekend and capped it off with a 3-1 victory over No. 15 Texas.
Evansville brings a 6-12 record into play this week after splitting two games with MVC foe Bradley over the weekend. Overall, they are 2-7 in their last nine games.
DIFFERENT VIEW FROM THE TOP
Senior Jennifer Glueckert was inserted into the leadoff spot in the order by head coach Michelle Gardner and she responded over the weekend at the IU Classic. The South Bend native went 5-for-9 at the plate with a pair of doubles and was robbed of a couple other hits on dazzling defensive plays by the opponent. It marked the 11th time in 137 starts that she had appeared at the top of the batting order.
ORDER DOES NOT MATTER...
...OR DOES IT?
Sophomore Samantha Berenter has been hitting from any spot in the order this season. She has 17 at-bats in the No. 7 spot in the order and is hitting .353 with five doubles, five RBI and seven runs scored. In the No. 8 spot, she is hitting .429 in 14 at-bats with two doubles and three RBI. Recently she was moved up in the order and responded well, going 3-for-5 in cleanup spot with a home run and three RBI.
In contrast to Berenter's hitting prowess throughout the lineup, there are a couple other examples that show certain players are comfortable in a familiar spot in the order. The first example is junior Cassie Gogreve
in the No. 5 spot in the order. She is hitting .333 with two home runs and nine RBI in 51 at-bats in the fifth spot and is 1-for-12 in at-bats outside that spot. Kelsey Stander
has become accustomed to the No. 9 spot, hitting .308 and scoring six runs out of the spot while hitting just .167 in the No. 2 spot in the order.
