BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers (8-17) split a double-header with the Ball State Cardinals (9-13) Saturday afternoon. Indiana defeated Ball State 3-2 in game one and then lost 1-0 in game two.
The Hoosiers rallied to tie game one 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Staci Meek reached first on an error by the first baseman Misty Snider scoring Monique Bullock to tie the game. In the tenth inning, Meek singled to left field. Freshman Heather Suca put down a sacrifice bunt to move Meek to second base. Freshman Stormy Hanson singled to left center to bring in Meek for the win. Sophomore Alison Cooke improves her record to 5-6 with the win. Cooke pitched ten innings allowing only one earned run.
In game two, it was a defensive battle for the first five innings until the Cardinals scored their only run in the sixth. In the seventh, Suca singled to right field and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hanson. Sophomore Brooke Monroe reached on a fielder's choice moving Suca to third. The Hoosiers had runners on first and third in the seventh, but were unable to bring them in for the tie or even the win. Teresa Martinez drops to 2-9 with the loss.
"I think we played well overall today," said head coach Diane Stephenson. "We had a couple of errors today, but we didn't let them hurt us. We stayed aggressive in the second game and had less strikeouts."
The Hoosiers will be back in action Tuesday, March 28, as they host a
double-header with Kent State at 2:00 p.m. at the IU Softball Field.
