The Hoosiers returned home to Bloomington last weekend to play its first home games of the season at the IU Classic and took full advantage. Indiana went 4-0 during the classic and then added a pair of late-inning victories against Butler to improve to 6-0 at home. This weekend signals the start of Big Ten play as the Minnesota Golden Gophers come to town with a 18-13 overall record.
Morgan Melloh as been a force in the circle for the Hoosiers over the last six games, going 6-0 with a 1.08 ERA and five complete games. She also has 67 strikeouts in just 39 innings pitched and opponents are hitting just .129 against her in that span.
Morgan Melloh leads all NCAA Division I pitchers with 233 strikeouts this season
The 17 strikeouts vs. Butler on Tuesday are the 2nd most in a game in Melloh's career
The 6-0 start at home this year is the best start at home since a 13-0 start in 1990
Opponents are hitting just .190 with runners in scoring position this year
The Hoosiers are on a six-game win streak, the longest since 2007
The last time Indiana was six games over .500 was in 2006 (17-11-1)
Breanna Saucedo has 28 career multi-hit games
Freshman Meaghan Murphy has five games with 2 or more RBI this season
Junior catcher Cassie Gogreve enters play this weekend with a four-game hit streak
Gogreve has thrown out 10-of-30 attempted base stealers this season (had 23 last year to lead BCS catchers)
MORGAN MOWS `EM DOWN
Senior pitcher Morgan Melloh has started her Indiana career just as she did her Fresno State career - by being a workhorse in the circle and registering strikeout after strikeout. She has 16 complete games to her credit and 153.2 innings pitched to go with a Big Ten-best 233 strikeouts. Assuming she keeps up at this strikeout-per-game pace, she will have a chance to be the single-season leader in strikeouts at Indiana (370 by Amy Unterbrink in 1986). She has 12 games with 10+ strikeouts, led by a 14-strikeout effort against No. 4 Florida in Palm Springs earlier this year and most recently a 17-strikeout performance against Butler that is the most among any Big Ten pitcher this season. She followed that up with 14 strikeouts in the second game of the doubleheader against Butler.
Melloh's career total of 1371 strikeouts puts her in 12th place on the NCAA career strikeout list. See page 4 of the game notes for a more in-depth look at Melloh's career by the numbers and where she could end up by the end of this season.
OLSON DOES IT ALL
Senior Sara Olson has a 3-0 record in the circle this year and is third on the team with a .322 batting average and leads the team with five home runs, six doubles and 20 RBI. Her nine multi-hit games are second on the team and she is hitting .370 with runners in scoring position. She has 22 career home runs to put her in eighth place on the Indiana career home runs list.
After reeling off four wins in four games at the Hoosier Classic, Indiana continued its wining ways with a doubleheader sweep of Butler on Tuesday to run its winning streak to six games - the longest since a nine-game win streak in 2007.
