Bloomington, Indiana-- The Indiana Softball team dropped a pair of one-run games in the first day of the IU Softball Tournament at the IU Softball Field Saturday.
The Hoosiers (11-15) battled Ball State in game one. The Cardinals (6-15) scored two runs in the first and third innings to build a 4-0 lead. IU rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Melissa Narewski singled scoring freshman Brooke Monroe, then junior Monica Zahasky hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing senior Jaime Thedford to tag from third. The Hoosier scoring concluded when junior Sheri Savko scored on a wild pitch.
IU battled Illinois State (11-12) in the second game of the IU Tournament. The Redbird's second baseman, April Schermann, came up with a clutch RBI single in the top of the eighth to give her team the 6-5 win. IU appeared to have the game under control early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Narewski and Savko each had hits in the inning to extend their hitting streaks to six and five games, respectively.
In game three, Illinois State defeated Ball State 6-1. The Redbird's Heather Stella hit a three-run homer in the third to break the game open.
The IU Softball Tournament concludes Sunday. Illinois State and Ball State start at 11 a.m., Indiana and Illinois State are scheduled for 1 p.m., and the final game is between Indiana and Ball State at 3 p.m.
