March 28, 2000 HOOSIERS DEFEAT KENT STATE 1-0
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers (9-17) defeated the Flashes (5-14) 1-0 in the single game on Tuesday, March 28. Game two the double-header was canceled due to the weather.
Indiana scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to clench the win and improve to 9-17 overall before entering Big Ten competition this Friday. In the sixth, senior Sheri Savko singled and then advanced to second on an error by the shortstop Kerry Kaser. Senior Staci Meek laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Savko to third. Freshman Heather Suca singled to left field bringing Savko to take the 1-0 lead.
Senior Teresa Martinez improves to 3-9 on the season with the shutout, her first of the season. Martinez allowed only four hits and struck out one during her seven-inning performance.
"I think we played really well today," said head coach Diane Stephenson. "We didn't score a lot, but we hit the ball well. I'm really happy for Teresa. She's been throwing the ball so well this whole year and hasn't been coming out on the winning in. It was good to see her get the win."
The Hoosiers will kick off the Big Ten season Friday, March 31 as they
host a double-header with Michigan at 2:00 p.m. at the IU Softball Field
in Bloomington, Indiana.
