“We came out to play hard, we stayed on our toes the whole game and kept fighting,” first-year head coach Sara Hayes said. “It was a good approach to start off Big Ten play with. We need to do a better job on the mound and a better job in the outfield. But we hope to continue swinging the bats and bringing more runs across the plate. Ohio State is a great team and pitcher Katie Chains did a nice job on the mound.”
The Buckeyes scored their first two runs in the bottom of the second taking a 2-0 lead. Junior Breana Pozzi scored the first Buckeye run off a Jennifer Johnson single to centerfield. Johnson was then sent home as Meghan Rowlands sent the ball to the center, claiming her first of three hits on the afternoon.
Freshman Abby Page (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) led off the third inning for Indiana. Page singled to first on a bunt but was able to advance to second on an error by the short stop and then to third on a throwing error. With no outs and Page on third, the Hoosiers posed a great scoring threat on Ohio State. IU was unable to capitalize as the Buckeyes closed out the inning with Page left on base.
OSU took a 3-0 advantage over Indiana in the bottom of the third on an unearned run. Karisa Evans reached first on a catcher’s interference and advanced to second on Annie Dedic’s sacrifice bunt. Ashley Cutcliff sent Evans home on her double to left field.
Pitcher Megan Roark (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park) replaced Katie Witham (Scottsdale, Arz./Chaparral) at the mound after completing four innings for Indiana. Witham (4-7) left the game allowing four hits, three runs, while striking out one. In the fifth, the Buckeyes loaded the bases with no outs. Kristine Himes singled to leftfield driving in Evans and Rowlands, taking a 5-0 lead over the Hoosiers.
Stormy Hanson (Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado), who returned back to the catcher’s position after suffering from a hamstring injury, scored the only Hoosier run in the top of the sixth inning. Hanson reached first on a hard hit to the short stop and advanced to second on her 13th stolen base of the year. Abby Stark (Vancouver, Wash./Central Catholic) slammed the ball to the outfield wall in centerfield driving Hanson home on her 13th RBI of the season.
OSU clinched its victory in the bottom of the sixth scoring three more runs, making the final score, 8-1.
OSU out-hit IU 13-7 on the afternoon. Page went two-for-two for the Hoosiers, Hanson went two-for-three and Stark, Ashley Griffiths (Dove Canyon, Calif./Trabuco) and Dawn Ramynke (Placentia, Calif./Sonora) each added a hit.
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow at noon for their second meeting on the weekend against Ohio State.
