BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers (10-20, 1-3) lost 5-4 to Michigan State (23-14, 2-2) on Sunday afternoon at the IU Softball Field.
Michigan State took an early lead with a one run homer by Stacey Phillips in the top of the first inning. The Hoosiers battled back in the top of the third inning scoring three runs. Freshman Stormy Hanson doubled scoring Staci Meek and Sheri Savko. Freshman Lisa Mattke then singled to left field bringing in Hanson from second base. Indiana scored its last run in the top of the seventh when Senior Sheri Savko hit her third homerun of the season to put the score at 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Spartans won the game when Tiffany Thomas hit a grand slam to defeat the Hoosiers 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
Savko went 1-for-3 with RBI and scored two runs for the Hoosiers. Freshman Lauren Hendrix went 2-for-3 on the day while Hanson doubled, scored a run and had two RBI. Sophomore Alison Cooke took the loss for the Hoosiers on the mound and drops to 5-8 on the season.
"I'm really proud of our kids," said head coach Diane Stephenson. "We've been playing really well and there's going to be times when we're going to make some young mistakes. That's exactly what happened today. We had two ground balls and both times the player tried to get two outs and instead sent to extra players to the plate."
The Hoosiers will be back in action Tuesday, March 4, as they travel to Indiana State for a double-header at 4:00 p.m.
