BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers lost 5-2 to Indiana State on Thursday evening in Terre Haute, Ind. at Price Field. Indiana drops to 10-21 overall and remains 1-3 in the Big Ten while Indiana State improves to 12-20 overall.
Indiana State struck early scoring four of their five runs the first three innings. The Sycamores scored one run in the first when junior pitcher Jenny Smith loaded the bases and walked in Emily Stuck. In the second inning, Melanie Newnum stole second base and advanced to home on an error by catcher Brooke Monroe. In the bottom of the third, Stacey Sparger hit a two run homerun to extent the lead to 4-0.
For the Hoosiers, senior Teresa Martinez hit a single to right center field to score Brooke Monroe and Lauren Hendrix in the top of the fourth inning. Martinez finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Monroe went 1-for-2 with a double and scored one run. Freshman Lauren Hendrix went 1-for-3 and scored one run. Smith took the loss for the Hoosiers and drops to 1-3 on the season.
The Hoosiers will return to Big Ten action this weekend as they travel to Penn State on Friday, April 7. The double-header will begin at 2:00 p.m. (EST) at Nittany Lion Field. Indiana will travel to Ohio State for a single game at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, April 8 and another single game on Sunday, April 9 at 12:00 p.m. (EST).
