Bloomington,Ind.--The Indiana softball team (8-21-1, 2-8-0) split their double header with the Michigan State Spartans (22-10, 5-3) today at the IU Softball Field, winning the first 6-1, but falling 8-2 in the second.

Coach Diane Stephenson said, "I think we did a really good job in the first game; we really needed a win. In the second game, we had several breakdowns and mental errors."

The second conference win could not have come at a better time after getting swept by Northwestern last weekend. But in the first game today the Cream and Crimson did not look to be in a slump at all. With nine hits, the Hoosiers got back on track. In the first inning, IU led off with three singles and scored two runs. Khara Good and Staci Meek both scored off of senior Monica Armendarez's single to right field.

Michigan State tried to catch up scoring one run in the second, but failed to do any more. Indiana put up four more runs to win 6-1.

In the third, Armendarez smashed a solo home run over the left field fence. With her seventh home run of the season, Armendarez has consecutively hit at least one home run in every Big Ten series. In the sixth, the Hoosiers scored three insurance runs to seal the victory with hits from Jennifer Pullon, Ashley Gayer and Erica Del Toro.

Sophomore pitcher Teresa Martinez picked up her fifth win and holds onto a 2.53 ERA. Martinez gave up seven hits and one earned run while striking out four batters.

The second game was not what Indiana wanted losing 8-2 managing only four hits and committing four errors.

Armendarez collected both RBI during the second half of the double header with a single in the fourth inning to score Khara Good and a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Indiana will be back in Big Ten play this weekend traveling to Wisconsin for a double header Friday, April 10 and a single game on April 11. Action is set for 1 p.m.
