April 9, 2000 INDIANA SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH OHIO STATE
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana Softball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon as they lost 6-3 in game one and rallied to beat Ohio State 5-1 in game two. The Hoosiers are now 11-24 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten play.
In game one, Indiana struck early scoring three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Brooke Monroe doubled to left field scoring senior Staci Meek. Freshman Stormy Hanson doubled to left field and scored Monroe. Senior Sheri Savko then stepped up with a single to right field to bring in Hanson from second base. Ohio State scored four runs in the sixth inning to go up 6-3 to clench the victory.
Freshman Stormy Hanson went 2-for-3 with one RBI, a double, and scored one run in game one. On the mound for Indiana was senior Teresa Martinez. Martinez drops to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten competition with the loss.
In game two, the Hoosiers scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Buckeyes when both Staci Meek and Monique Bullock scored on an error by Ohio State. In the next inning, Sheri Savko hit a two run homerun (4th of the season) bringing in Monica Zahasky. Later in the inning, Meek singled to second base bringing in Bullock from third to take the commanding 5-1 lead.
Staci Meek went 3-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and one stolen base in game two. Also hitting well for the Hoosiers was Teresa Martinez who went 2-for-2 on the game. Savko came through with her 4th homerun of the season as she went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Pitching for the Hoosiers was sophomore Alison Cooke who tied her career best six strikeouts in a single game. Cooke improves to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 11, as they travel to Ball State for a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Muncie, Indiana.
