April 15, 2000 INDIANA LOSES 4-3 TO NORTHWESTERN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team lost 4-3 to Northwestern Saturday afternoon. Indiana is now 12-28 overall and 2-9 in the Big Ten while Northwestern is 17-17 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten play.
In the second inning, senior Monica Zahasky singled to center field bringing in Lisa Mattke and Sheri Savko to take a 2-0 lead. Northwestern rallied in the top of the fourth when Stacey Austin scored on an error and Rane Gunderson scored on a fielder's choice. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lisa Mattke singled bringing in Sheri Savko from second base to take a 3-2 lead. In the next inning, Northwestern scored when Gunderson reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt scoring Gretchen Barnes. Brett Nakabayashi then singled scoring Barnes.
Sheri Savko hit 2-for-3 scoring two runs and stealing one base while sophomore Brooke Monroe went 2-for-4 with a double. Monica Zahasky drove in two runs on the afternoon followed by Lisa Mattke with one RBI. Teresa Martinez takes the loss as she struck-out three and allowed 0 earned runs. Martinez is now 5-14.
"We didn't play defense today," said head coach Diane Stephenson. "We made three really critical errors in the game. We really just gave the win away."
The Hoosiers will be back in action tomorrow, April 16, as they host the Northwestern Wildcats in a single game at noon at the IU Softball Field. The game was previously scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but has been changed to 12:00 p.m. due to weather conditions.
