    INDIANA DEFEATS NORTHWESTERN 5-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team defeated Northwestern 5-4 Sunday afternoon at IU Softball Field. The Hoosiers improve to 13-28 overall and 3-9 in Big Ten play while the Wildcats drop to 17-18 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten.

The Hoosiers got off to a great a start scoring four runs in the first inning. Sheri Savko reached base on a fielder's choice while Lisa Mattke and Staci Meek scored on a error by the Wildcat's catcher. Monica Zahasky singled to right field scoring Stormy Hanson. Sheri Savko scored on the play when the right fielder bobbled the ball. The Wildcats had three errors in the inning allowing the Hoosiers to capitalize on their mistakes. In the top of the seventh, Indiana scored an insurance run when Sheri Savko drove in Brooke Monroe from third base.

Northwestern scored one run in the first inning as Jenn Shull hit homerun with two runners on base. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Brooke Siebel did not touch home plate and was called out on the play. Therefore, Shull's homer was reduced to a double scoring only one run instead of three on the play. Northwestern tried to rally back as they scored one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Alyson Shulz hit a single to center field scoring two runs for the Wildcats bringing the score to 5-4. Senior Staci Meek closed the door for the Wildcats as she threw out Erin Jancic at third base from center field. Jancic would have been the tying run at third had she been safe.

Teresa Martinez picks up the win at the plate improving to 6-4 on the season. Martinez allowed only two earned runs on the afternoon.

"Every win that we get now is very big for us," said assistant coach Donna Bonebrake. "What we have to keep focused on is that we still have a very good shot at the Big Ten tournament. That's why every game is crucial for us. This was a huge win for us."

The Hoosiers will be back in action on Thursday, April 20 as they host a double-header with Louisiana Tech at 2:00 p.m. at IU Softball Complex.
