Wagner Named Big Ten Player of the Week; Meyer Claims Top Freshman Honor
April 23, 2012
PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Junior Amanda Wagner and freshman Brianna Meyer were both recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Monday, taking home two of the three weekly awards handed out by the conference. Wagner was named the Player of the Week and Meyer was awarded the Freshman of the Week honor.
"We are thrilled for Amanda and Bri to win these awards this week," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "They both had an outstanding week at the plate and are certainly deserving of this recognition."
Wagner, a native of Burbank, Ill., reached base safely in 13 of 15 plate appearances in the four games last week for the Hoosiers and hit .800 to help Indiana win two out of three against Northwestern. She combined for a 1.909 OPS against the Wildcats, including a perfect on-base percentage in the doubleheader on Sunday. Additionally, she reached base all four times in the series finale with NU and scored four runs to tie the IU single-game record.
For the season, Wagner is hitting .371 with eight home runs and 31 RBI to lead the team in all three categories. Her .647 slugging percentage ranks fourth in the Big Ten and she has also drawn 30 walks and been hit-by-pitch seven times for an on-base percentage of .523.
Those numbers get even more impressive when you look at her performance in conference play, where she has a .543 batting average - tops in the conference. She has also scored 15 runs to go with four home runs and 18 RBI for a 1.057 slugging percentage. She has drawn 16 walks as well to help aid her .704 on-base percentage.
Wagner is the first Hoosier to win the award this season and the first since Sara Olson won it on April 4, 2011.
Meyer, a freshman from Alta Loma, Calif., is the first Hoosier to ever win the Freshman of the Week award after she hit .556 during the three-game series against Northwestern. She had at least one RBI in each of the three games against NU and capped it off with a three-RBI game in the series finale. She also scored the winning run from first base on Shelby Gogreve's double to center field in the sixth inning.
For the season, Meyer is hitting .293 with 21 runs scored, six doubles, a home run and 17 RBI and has drawn 19 walks for an on-base percentage of .389. She has also committed just five errors this season for a .982 fielding percentage.
The Hoosiers play host to No. 11 Louisville on Wednesday with the first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. ET.
