April 28, 2000 INDIANA SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MINNESOTA...MEEK HITS GRAND SLAM
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.: The Indiana Softball team split a doubleheader with Minnesota losing game one 2-1 in nine innings and then rallying in to win 7-4 in game two. The Hoosiers are now 14-29 overall and 4-10 in the Big Ten and the Gophers are 30-25 overall and 3-10 in Big Ten play.
In game one, Minnesota scored a runner from second base on a double in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 2-1. The Hoosiers only run came in the top of the fourth inning when freshman Lauren Hendrix hit a two out single scoring senior Sheri Savko from third base. Hendrix went 3-for-4 in game one with one RBI. Senior Teresa Martinez took the loss on the mound dropping her record to 6-15 on the season. Martinez struck out two, walked one and only allowed one earned run on the game.
In game two, the Hoosiers scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win 7-4. Senior Staci Meek hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 5th inning to put the Hoosiers up for good at 5-4. In the seventh, Hendrix doubled to center field scoring Savko. Freshman Heather Suca then singled to second base bringing in Monique Bullock from third. Freshman Jessica Carriger went 3-for-3 scoring one run while Hendrix went 2-for-3 with one RBI and scored one run. Jenn Smith picked up the win for Hoosiers on the mound as she struck out four and only walked one in six innings. Smith is now 2-4 on the season.
The Hoosiers will be back in action tomorrow, April 29, as they travel to Wisconsin for a single game at 1:00 p.m.
