Hoosiers Split with Kentucky

Lexington, Ky.-- The Indiana softball team split a doubleheader with the Kentucky Wildcats, winning game one, 3-1 and falling in game two, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the UK Softball Complex in Lexington. Indiana moves to 29-28 on the season, while Kentucky moves to 25-28-1.
Designated player Lauren Hines led Indiana at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a homerun. Right fielder Val White was 3-for-5 with an RBI on the day while catcher Tory Yamaguchi was 1-for-5 including a homerun.
Heather Stillians was 1-1 from the circle, pitching 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.
In the first game, the Hoosiers got on the board in the top of the fourth when Hines hit her sixth homerun of the season to left center field, giving Indiana the lead, 1-0.
Kentucky tied the game, 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by left fielder Ashley Fertic to score designated player Amy Kendall, who had walked to start the inning.
Indiana came back to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Hines started the inning with a base hit to short. With Abby Page pinch-running, third baseman Rachel Terry singled to left and advanced on the throw, putting runners on second and third. Heather Hohs came into pinch-run for Terry, which brought second baseman Ashley Griffiths to the plate. Griffiths singled to center, scoring Page. White then came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to deep center, which scored Hohs and gave the Hoosiers a 3-1 lead.
Stillians dispatched the Wildcats 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for Indiana.
In game two, Kentucky got on the board first in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Fertic. The Wildcats tacked on another run in the bottom of the third on a base hit by shortstop Brooke Marnitz to take the lead, 2-0.
The Hoosiers cut the lead to one when Yamaguchi hit her team-leading eighth homerun of the season to left field.
The Wildcats got an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on another RBI single by Fretic, giving Kentucky the lead, 3-1.
Indiana cut the lead to one for the second time in the game when Hohs, pinch-running for Terry, scored on a two-base Kentucky error.
Kentucky right fielder Amber Janneck put the Wildcats back up by two on a solo shot to left field.
The Hoosiers rallied in the top of the seventh to load the bases but were unable to score, falling in game two, 4-2.
Indiana continues Big Ten Conference play this weekend when they take on Penn State in single games on Friday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. The Hoosiers then face Ohio State in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 2 starting at 12:00 p.m.
