May 6, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior first baseman Sara Olson (Orland Park, Ill.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District V First Team on Friday, as announced by CoSIDA. Olson was a second team all-region selections last year and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She is double-majoring in Recreation Sports Management as well as Park and Recreation Management.
"Sara has done such a great job for us, not only on the field but in the classroom that this award is certainly well deserved," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "She has emerged as a true leader for our team this year and continues to set a great example not only for our program but for Indiana University."
Olson leads the team with eight home runs and 34 RBI this season and holds a Big Ten-best .696 on-base percentage while leading the Hoosiers to a first place tie with Michigan heading to the final two weeks of the regular season. In Big Ten play, Olson is hitting .500 with three home runs and 14 RBI with a .853 slugging percentage.
The last time Indiana had an Academic All-American from the softball team was Pam Craig, who was a Third Team honoree in 1988. Jennilee Huddleston was the last player to be named to one of the three all-district teams, garnering second team accolades in 2007.
To be eligible, student-athletes must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter on the team or an important reserve with significant athletic credentials. The student-athlete must also be at least a sophomore in athletic standing and completed at least one academic year at the institution.
