May 7, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team will head to Lincoln, Neb. to play as the No. 12 seed in the 2013 Big Ten Softball Tournament. The Hoosiers are slated to take on No. 5 Northwestern on Thursday, May 9 at 12:30 p.m. EST. All 12 B1G schools will take part in the single-elimination style tournament.
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS
Northwestern ranks third in the conference with it’s .305 team batting average. Six members of the Wildcats’ squad own .300-or-better averages with Amy Letourneau pacing the team with her .384 clip.
NU’s pitching staff has combined for a 3.68 earned run average. Letourneau has tossed 205.2 of Northwestern’s 334.2 innings this season, posting a 2.48 ERA and a 20-12 record.
HOOSIERS' TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Hoosiers are 2-4 in tournament action, with wins over Minnesota (1986) and Iowa (2006). Thursday’s meeting with Northwestern will be the second Big Ten Tournament match up with the Wildcats, as both teams previously met in the 1986 postseason tourney where Indiana fell to NU, 2-0.
LAST TIME OUT
Meaghan Murphy opened the game with four perfect innings and five hitless before a single broke up the no-no in the top of the sixth. Both teams failed to plate any runs in regulation, sending Indiana into its eigth extra-innings affair of the season, but it would be a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighth that would deal IU a 1-0 loss in game two.
In game three, Indiana came back from a one-run deficit after scoring a pair in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead over Minnesota, but again, the Golden Gophers would win it walk-off fashion after driving in two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
