Indiana Trounces Northwestern, 11-3, in Six Innings
The Indiana offense stepped up to the plate in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday against Northwestern (18-24, 6-9 Big Ten), posting a 11-3 win in six innings over the Wildcats at the IU Softball Field in a game carried live on the Big Ten Network.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team will head to Lincoln, Neb. to play as the No. 12 seed in the 2013 Big Ten Softball Tournament. The Hoosiers are slated to take on No. 5 Northwestern on Thursday, May 9 at 12:30 p.m. EST. All 12 B1G schools will take part in the single-elimination style tournament.

The Northwestern softball team will head into the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 5 seed after posting a 12-10 record in conference games this season. The Wildcats are 30-21 overall and enter Thursday’s game after suffering a series sweep to Michigan last weekend.

Northwestern ranks third in the conference with it’s .305 team batting average. Six members of the Wildcats’ squad own .300-or-better averages with Amy Letourneau pacing the team with her .384 clip.

NU’s pitching staff has combined for a 3.68 earned run average. Letourneau has tossed 205.2 of Northwestern’s 334.2 innings this season, posting a 2.48 ERA and a 20-12 record.

Indiana and Northwestern will meet for the 100th time in program history this Thursday, with the Wildcats holding a 61-38 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams previously met for a three-game series on April 21-22, 2012, where the Hoosiers took the series, 2-1. Indiana rallied from a five-run deficit to take an 8-6 win in the series opener. Northwestern would win game two, but the Hoosiers will respond with an 11-3, six-inning win.

Indiana will look to win its first B1G Tournament Title in program history when it enters this Thursday’s game as the 12 seed. The Hoosiers will play in the Big Ten Softball Tournament for just the fourth time in program history when they head to Lincoln, Neb. after making appearances in 1982, 1996 (No. 4 Seed) and 2006 (No. 6 Seed).

The Hoosiers are 2-4 in tournament action, with wins over Minnesota (1986) and Iowa (2006). Thursday’s meeting with Northwestern will be the second Big Ten Tournament match up with the Wildcats, as both teams previously met in the 1986 postseason tourney where Indiana fell to NU, 2-0.

Indiana last took the field in Minneapolis, Minn. for the Hoosiers final games of the regular season. The Hoosiers dropped all three to Minnesota with back-to-back tough walk-off losses. After surrendering eight runs in their 8-0 loss in game one, the Hoosiers pitching came back to quiet the Golden Gophers offense in game two.

Meaghan Murphy  opened the game with four perfect innings and five hitless before a single broke up the no-no in the top of the sixth. Both teams failed to plate any runs in regulation, sending Indiana into its eigth extra-innings affair of the season, but it would be a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighth that would deal IU a 1-0 loss in game two.

In game three, Indiana came back from a one-run deficit after scoring a pair in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead over Minnesota, but again, the Golden Gophers would win it walk-off fashion after driving in two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
