Hoosiers Set for 2006 Fall Campaign
Sept. 4, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team begins its preparation for the 2006-07 season with a trio of fall tournaments. The Hoosiers will compete at the Chicagoland Fall Classic, Sept. 15-17, before playing at the Indiana State Tournament on Sept. 24 and returning home to host the Indiana Fall Classic on Oct. 1 at the IU Softball Field.
"We are excited to get on the field and start working towards another progressive year in Indiana Softball," IU head coach Stacey Phillips said. "We have eight new players on our roster that will be looked upon to fill some voids left by some very strong seniors from last season. Fall ball will provide us some game experience to get some butterflies worked out, as well as look at points of emphasis in the off season."
The Hoosiers open the Chicagoland Fall Classic in Orland Park, Ill., with Lewis at 9 p.m. on Sept. 15, before taking on Valparaiso at 5 p.m., and DePaul at 7 p.m. on the 16th. IU closes the tournament with Illinois State and South Dakota State on Sept. 17 with the ISU game at 10 a.m., and the SDSU contest at noon.
Last year, IU posted a 3-1-1 record at the Classic. The Hoosiers recorded victories against Lewis (1-0), Illinois-Chicago (1-0) and Olivet Nazarene (3-1), while falling to DePaul (6-1). IU finished in a 0-0 tie against Bradley, as the game ended due to the time limit.
Indiana travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Indiana State Tournament on Sept. 24. Games and game times have still yet to be determined.
At the 2005 Indiana State Tournament, the Hoosiers got in three innings of play against Eastern Illinois before the tournament was cut short due to rain. Indiana led EIU, 4-0, at the stopping point.
The Hoosiers wrap up the fall docket at home at the Indiana Fall Classic. The Hoosiers welcome in-state foes Indiana State and IUPUI to town for the preseason tournament. IU will open play against Indiana State at 10 a.m., before taking on IUPUI at noon. ISU and IUPUI will meet at 2 p.m.
The Hoosiers defeated Butler in last year's tournament, 9-1, but fell just short against Louisville, 4-3.
