Fall Season Preview Release
September 11 , 2002
Hayes was named head coach at Indiana on August 14 after serving two seasons as the head coach at the University of Northern Iowa and five years as an assistant at DePaul. While at DePaul from 1995-00, the Blue Demons compiled a 265-97 (.732) overall record and made back-to-back College World Series appearances in 1999 and 2000, including a Final Four finish in 1999. Hayes is assisted by Mickey Dean and Kathy Morton.
"Although I have grown professionally during my tenure at Northern Iowa, leading the Indiana University program will be a career position," said Hayes upon her hiring. "I want to be a vital part of a dynamic community. Professionally, Indiana University provides the opportunity to compete for the national championship, which is necessary for me in my career vision."
This past season, Indiana split four regular season games against the Cardinals. At the Hoosier Invitational on March 16 and 17, Indiana won 8-3 just one day after sustaining a 6-3 loss on the opening day of the tournament. On April 23, Indiana won the opening game off the doubleheader, 1-0, behind the strength of a six-hit shutout by freshman Katie Witham, yet lost the nightcap, 4-3 in eight innings.
Indiana finished the 2002 campaign with a 13-31 overall record. Ball State head coach Terri Laux welcomes back 13 letterwinners from last year's team, which posted a 23-22 overall record and a 13-7 Mid-American Conference mark on the way to a runner-up West Division finish and a berth in the league's postseason tournament.
