Hoosiers Start Fall Season With Win Over Southern Indiana
Sept. 16, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana softball head coach Michelle Gardner got her first chance to see the Hoosiers in action this past Sunday, when they welcomed the University of Southern Indiana to Bloomington for a fall scrimmage. Indiana scored in each of the first four innings on their way to a 10-0 win. The game was played inside at Mellencamp Pavilion due to the high winds and rain in the Bloomington area on Sunday.
"This was my first chance to get to see our team in some game situations," said Gardner, "and I thought we handled them pretty well. Our pitchers did very well and we started out swinging the bats pretty good as well so I am pretty happy with how things went. But there are obviously some things we can work on and we will over the course of the fall as we prepare for the spring season."
Senior Emily Bergeson got things started the right way for Indiana in the first inning with an opposite field home run from the leadoff position. The Hoosiers added another run in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Brittany Stein to take a 2-0 lead. Bergeson drove in another run in the second inning with a single to right field to increase the IU lead to 3-0.
The Hoosiers tacked on three more runs in the third inning with the help of a double by Stephanie Pellerito and a deep single by Brittany Stein early in the inning. Later in the inning, Sophomore Alyssa Maiese doubled to center field to drive home the sixth run of the day for Indiana.
While the IU offense was getting started, the Hoosier pitching staff was also on a roll of its own, keeping USI out of the hit column through the first three innings. They would go on to allow just two hits all day in a dominating performance by senior Monica Wright, sophomore Sara Olson and Maiese.
Indiana added to the lead in the fifth inning on a double to center by Sarah Padove and a run scoring single by Stein.
The next fall action for the Hoosiers will be Sunday, September 28 when they travel to Indiana State to take on the Sycamores and Butler.
