    Savko Named Assistant Coach

    Bloomington, Ind. -Indiana University interim softball coach Stacey Phillips announced today that she has hired Sheri Savko as an interim assistant coach for the 2004-05 season.

    Last year Savko served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Hoosiers. She earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana in 2001.

    The Monterey, Calif., native has worked at IU Softball camps as well as working at top summer camps in California. In addition, she was an assistant coach for the 2001 Bloomington North softball team.

    Prior to her coaching career, Savko started for the Hoosiers in 1999 and 2000, ranking eighth on the IU career list with eight home runs. In 2000, her final season with the Hoosiers, Savko batted .262, leading the team with five home runs, 22 runs scored and 11 stolen bases; earning a spot on the All-Big Ten third team.

    She was two-time academic All-Big Ten honoree and received the Scholastic Achievement Award in 2000 as a senior.

    Before coming to the Hoosiers in 1999, Savko played a year at Sacramento State and one season for Monterey Peninsula Junior College in California. She was named the Central Coast Conference player that year at Monterey.
