Newcomers Shine in Opening Days of Chicagoland Fall Classic
Sept. 17, 2006
ORLAND PARK, Ill. - The Indiana softball team opened fall play this weekend at the annual Chicagoland Fall Classic in Orland Park, Ill. Strong performances by Hoosier newcomers highlighted the first two days of the tournament for IU.
Indiana tasted victory for the first time in the young 2006-07 campaign, as the Hoosiers shutout in-state foe Valparaiso, 1-0, on Sept. 16.
With the game scoreless heading into the seventh inning, freshman infielder Stephanie Turner hit a lead-off double. Bergeson followed that hit with a single of her own, driving in Turner for the win.
Sophomore transfer Monica Wright pitched all seven innings for IU, only allowing five hits. At the plate, freshman outfielder Jennifer Glueckert went two-for-two against the Crusaders, while Bergeson was one-for-three.
Indiana opened the weekend with a tough, 4-2, loss against Lewis. Lewis scored four runs in the first inning. The Hoosiers had runners in scoring position every inning, but could only plate two scores.
Senior Christy Wahl earned the starting nod in the circle, while Wright closed the game for the Hoosiers without giving up a run.
On Sept. 16, Indiana lost to DePaul, despite holding the Blue Demons to only one run until the fourth inning (six-inning game due to time constraints). Wahl earned the start, while Wright closed. Offensively, Bergeson recorded the Hoosiers' only hit in the loss.
Indiana closes the Chicagoland Fall Classic on Sept. 17 with Illinois State and South Dakota State.
