Hoosiers Pick Up Three Wins At Syamore Fall Classic Over The Weekend
Sept. 29, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team recently competed in the Sycamore Fall Classic on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., and came away with a 3-1 record. The Hoosiers started with a pair of wins on Saturday before earning a split on Sunday.
"It was really nice to get a lot of our younger players some game action," said Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner. "We were able to put them in some different situations and see how they reacted, which was good for them. Overall, I was happy with our play because it showed what we can be good at and what we need to work on between now and the start of the regular season."
On Saturday, the Hoosiers opened with a 3-1 win over the host Sycamores using some key hitting and solid pitching. The first inning started with the offense rolling along but two runners were thrown out at the plate in the inning and the game remained scoreless going to the second.
In the top of the third inning the Hoosiers finally broke through on an RBI single by freshman Amanda Wagner. Later in the inning, a throwing error by the ISU catcher allowed Wagner to score to make it 2-0. Then in the fifth inning, junior Kelsey Stander scored on a double steal to make the margin 3-0. Indiana State would add on run in the sixth inning before the time limit ran out to make the final score 3-1.
In game two on Saturday, freshman Jessica Dobson made her debut in the circle for the Hoosiers against Wabash Valley. In the second inning Wagner lined a single just ahead of Sara Olson, who blasted a two-run home run to give the Hoosiers an early 2-0 lead. Indiana broke it open in the fourth inning scoring five runs to take a 7-1 lead thanks to a two-run single from sophomore Bridget Langan, an RBI single from freshman Samantha Heyman and a two-run single from freshman Maria Gillis. Freshman Cassie Loweth also made her debut in the circle for Indiana, pitching the final inning to help seal up a 10-5 win.
On Sunday, Indiana opened with St. Joseph's College and came out with a 7-6 win over the Pumas. Some sloppy play on defense allowed St. Joe's to have a big inning and take a 6-1 lead after an inning and a half. But the Hoosiers did not back down and rallied for five runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 6-6. Wagner drove in the first run for IU with a sac fly in the first and drove in two more with a single in the second. Freshman Breanna Saucedo and Loweth also plated runs with base hits in the inning to draw IU even. Then in the third inning, Saucedo's base hit drove in sophomore Samantha Berenter for what proved to be the game-winning run.
In the final game against Butler, the Hoosiers ran into a tough pitcher and were not able to get the offense going in the 4-0 loss to the Bulldogs.
