BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As Indiana University Softball Head Coach Michelle Gardner enters her fourth season with the Hoosiers, she knows she has a lot to replace from an outstanding 2011 team that advanced to NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. Gone are the top pitcher (Morgan Melloh) and RBI producer (Sara Olson), so Gardner is looking for players to step in and fill those voids.

The fall schedule allows Gardner to put players in those positions and get some experience in exhibition games. So far this fall, things are going just fine, as the Hoosiers have outscored their opponents, 38-10, over the first four games and different players have stepped up at different times to get the job done.

Below are brief recaps of each of the four games:

    Indiana 5, Grace College 1
Lora Olson and Breanna Saucedo picked up RBI's for the Hoosiers at the plate while Meaghan Murphy and Olson handled the pitching duties. Indiana scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to answer the one run that Grace scored in the top of the frame. From there, the pitchers held Grace in check and the offense scored five runs to get the win.

    Indiana 13, Grace College 1
The Indiana bats erupted for 21 hits in game two against Grace College, let by a three-hit game from freshman Brianna Meyer, who also drove in three runs. Amanda Wagner had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Meaghan Murphy also had three hits, including a home run, on her way to a three-RBI game. Junior Kelsey Brannon logged a pair of hits while Sarah Cretin drove in a pair with her base hit.

In the circle for the Hoosiers, freshman Lora Olson pitched the first four innings and did not allow a hit while striking out five. Another freshman, Miranda Tamayo came on to pitch the next two innings and gave up just two hits before Murphy closed the door in the seventh inning.

    Indiana 6, Indiana Wesleyan 2
Once again, Breanna Saucedo led the Indiana attack at the plate with three hits out of the leadoff spot. Brianna Meyer picked up another RBI hit while Samantha Heyman hit a solo home run to left center to regain the lead after IWU had rallied back to tie the game. Shortly after, Samantha Berenter clubbed a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left center field to pad the lead.

Meaghan Murphy pitched the first three innings and gave up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Lora Olson came on to pitch the final four innings and also allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

    Indiana 14, Indiana Wesleyan 6
The Indiana offense exploded for 14 runs, using nine hits and nine walks. Kelsey Brannon had two hits and two RBI while Heather Nelson reached base three times and scored three runs. Shelby Gogreve was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs and Lindsay Callanan made her one hit count, driving in three runs with a triple.

All three pitchers saw action in the circle again, with Murphy getting the start, Tamayo following and then Olson shutting things down late in the game.

The Hoosiers will return to the IU Softball Field on Oct. 9 for a pair of games against Ball State and Lake Land College.
