IU Softball Still Undefeated in Fall Ball
Sept. 29, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As Indiana University Softball Head Coach Michelle Gardner enters her fourth season with the Hoosiers, she knows she has a lot to replace from an outstanding 2011 team that advanced to NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. Gone are the top pitcher (Morgan Melloh) and RBI producer (Sara Olson), so Gardner is looking for players to step in and fill those voids.
The fall schedule allows Gardner to put players in those positions and get some experience in exhibition games. So far this fall, things are going just fine, as the Hoosiers have outscored their opponents, 38-10, over the first four games and different players have stepped up at different times to get the job done.
Below are brief recaps of each of the four games:
Indiana 5, Grace College 1
Indiana 13, Grace College 1
In the circle for the Hoosiers, freshman Lora Olson pitched the first four innings and did not allow a hit while striking out five. Another freshman, Miranda Tamayo came on to pitch the next two innings and gave up just two hits before Murphy closed the door in the seventh inning.
Indiana 6, Indiana Wesleyan 2
Meaghan Murphy pitched the first three innings and gave up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Lora Olson came on to pitch the final four innings and also allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Indiana 14, Indiana Wesleyan 6
All three pitchers saw action in the circle again, with Murphy getting the start, Tamayo following and then Olson shutting things down late in the game.
The Hoosiers will return to the IU Softball Field on Oct. 9 for a pair of games against Ball State and Lake Land College.
