Hoosiers Pick Up Two Wins at Indiana State; Host IU Classic On Sunday
Oct. 1, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana softball team will host the 2008 IU Fall Classic this Sunday, Oct. 5th at the IU Softball Field starting at 10 a.m. against Lakeland College. Also joining Lakeland College and Indiana will be Ball State University and the University of Southern Indiana.
The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 weekend at Indiana State last weekend, picking up wins over Indiana State and Butler University. In both games, pitching was the name of the game, as the Hoosiers allowed just one run combined in the two games. Against Indiana State, senior Monica Wright and sophomore Alyssa Maiese teamed up for the shutout of the Sycamores. The IU offense was paced by a pair of freshmen, Heather Nelson and Casey Jamerson, as Nelson collected two hits in the game while Jamerson drove in one of the two runs with a groundout. In game two against Butler, the Bulldogs held a slim 1-0 lead after plating a run in the top of the third inning. The Hoosiers threatened in the bottom of the inning, advancing the leadoff runner to third base before a popout ended the threat. The Hoosiers were not able to mount a threat over the next two innings, so the teams went to the sixth inning and time running out.
According to the rules set up for this tournament, each gamew as allowed 90 minutes and the Hoosiers were running out of time. Freshman Molly Anderson led off the sixth inning by reaching on an error by the Butler shortstop to bring up senior Sarah Padove, who had just been inserted as a defensive replacement in the top of the inning. With less than two minutes remaining, Padove drilled the 2-2 pitch over the fence for a walk-off two-run home run to give IU a 2-1 victory.
