BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball program announced its captains for the 2006-07 season. Senior Rachel Terry and redshirt junior Tory Yamaguchi were named captains for the upcoming campaign, head coach Stacey Phillips announced on Oct. 24.

"We are proud to have Rachel and Tory as our captains for this season," Phillips said. "Both young ladies have worked very hard in the development of the program, and their role this season will be to continue to build upon the recent successes on the field, in the classroom, socially and in the community. Along with this title comes responsibility, and as long as these two talented individuals accept that responsibility, they will help lead us to our goals."

Last season, Terry helped the Hoosiers to the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1996. The Palatine, Ill., native recorded the team's third-best batting average from a season ago, hitting at a .299 clip. Terry recorded 46 hits in 2006, including four homeruns.

"Rachel's experience through the program and vocal leadership will enable us to have solidity on the field during play and in the dugout through practices and games," Phillips said.

Yamaguchi returns to the Hoosier lineup after illness forced her to miss last season. Two seasons ago, the Woodland Hills, Calif., product recorded 11 homeruns, moving her into fifth all-time in career knocks with 21. An All-Big Ten honoree in 2005, Yamaguchi led the team with a .296 batting average and an impressive 26 RBI.

"Tory has not only softball experiences but life experiences that have brought her to this position," Phillips said. "She has overcome diversity in both, along with Rachel, and she will provide a constant reminder of what happens when you turn negatives into positives and defeat obstacles."

The Hoosiers open the 2007 slate at the University of Houston Tournament, Feb. 16-18. Indiana takes the field for the first time against Centenary on Feb. 16 at 9:30 a.m., at Cougar Softball Stadium.
