    Indiana Announces 2011 Softball Schedule

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2011 Indiana University softball was officially announced on Thursday, Nov. 4. The team will travel to tournaments five different states as well as host the Hoosier Classic in March. Head Coach Michelle Gardner will be entering her third season as the head coach of the Hoosiers in 2011.

    "We are playing some of the top teams in the country this year and it should be a great challenge for our team," Indiana softball head coach Michelle Gardner said. "The early season tournaments will certainly get us prepared for an outstanding Big Ten season and give our players the opportunity to show what they can do against the best of the best."

    The schedule opens for the Hoosiers on February 10 in the 2011 Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and will take on an Arizona team that won 52 games and made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2010.The Hoosiers will then play Nevada and Cal Poly and end with games against Texas Tech and Cal, two teams that also made it to the NCAA Tournament last year.

    The following weekend, the Hoosiers will head to Florida for the South Florida Tournament in Tampa. While in South Florida, the team will take on three 2010 NCAA Tournament teams in University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), DePaul and Fordham. The Hoosiers will also face University of South Florida (USF) and Mississippi.

    To round out February, the team will travel to the West Coast for the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The team opens the tournament against a Florida team who made it to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers will also play San Diego State, California, Cal State Fullerton and Loyola Marymount while in California.

    The Hoosiers will venture back down south March 4 for the Georgia Tournament hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens. The Hoosiers will face the Georgia Bulldogs twice in the tournament. The Bulldogs won 50 games last year on the way to the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers will also face Chattanooga, Campbell and James Madison in the tournament.

     

     

    From March 12-13 the Hoosiers will be in Oklahoma participating in the Oklahoma Tournament. The team will take on four teams in Norman, Okla., including an Oklahoma team that made it to the tournament last year. The team will also face Missouri State, Arkansas Pine Bluff and a team to be determined.

    On March 15 the Hoosiers will head to Tulsa, Okla., to play Tulsa and Northern Iowa in a doubleheader. The Hoosiers will return to Indiana on Friday, March 18 to host the Hoosier Classic. The Hoosiers will face Central Michigan and Wright State on the opening day of the tournament. The team will then play Loyola Chicago and Eastern Michigan on Saturday before closing out the tournament by playing Central Michigan and Wright State again on Sunday.

    Big Ten Season opens for the Hoosiers March 26-27 as they take on Minnesota at home. The team will also take on a non-conference opponent in Indiana State in Bloomington on March 30.

    The Hoosiers then head out on a five game road trip beginning April 2 in Ann Arbor Mich., to play a two-game set with the 2010 Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines. The team will then head south to take on non-conference University of Louisville before returning to Big Ten play with a visit to Penn State April 9-10.

    The team heads back to Bloomington to take on Ohio State on April 13. The Hoosiers will also take on Wisconsin April 16-17 while at home.

    Ball State will be the final non-conference opponent when they visit the Hoosiers on April 20.

    The Hoosiers will go back on the road April 23-24 to take on Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., before playing at Illinois on April 27.

    The month of April will come to an end with a return to Bloomington to face Iowa (April 20-May 1) before the team heads out on the final road trip of the season against Northwestern (May 7-8).

    The Hoosiers will close out the season at home with a two-game series against Purdue May 13-14, with an always valuable Smithville Crimson & Gold Cup point on the line.
