    Ben Hesen is entering his first season as a student coach after an accomplished swimming career with the Hoosiers. He is currently a member of the U.S. National Team in the 100 backstroke.

    SENIOR YEAR (2007-08)

    Won the NCAA Championship in the 100 backstroke with a school-record time of 44.72 ... Hesen's win is the first NCAA swimming title for the Hoosiers since Jim Montgomery captured the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle in 1976 ... part of 200-yard medley relay which set a new school record with a time of 1:25.37 to capture fifth place ... also competed at NCAAs in the 100 fly and earned All-America honors in the 200 back ... also picked up All-America honors in the 200 free relay (eighth), 400 medley relay (10th) and 400 free relay (11th) ...earned Indiana Male Athlete of the Year award ... named co-Big Ten Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Championships after taking league titles in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 medley relay (1:25.85) ... took the 100 backstroke title in a time of 45.92, breaking the Canham Natatorium record of 46.48 set by Michael Phelps in 2005 ... his 200 back time of 1:40.85 was a new school record, nearly two seconds better than his previous mark ... also set a new school record in the 100 butterfly (46.38) ... first team All-Big Ten ... the first IU swimmer to win three individual swimming titles since Chuck Sharpe in 1980 ... contributed a total of 78 points to the Hoosiers' second-place finish ... first in the 100 backstroke (48.95), 200 backstroke (1:44.83) and 100 butterfly (48.21) in dual meet victory at Tennessee ... led the 200 medley relay team (1:28.72) to victory and placed first in the 100 back (49.30), 200 back (1:46.31) and 100 butterfly (47.79) in a dual meet at Michigan ... first in the 100 backstroke (48.61), 200 backstroke (1:48.04) and 100 butterfly (48.35) in dual victory at Kentucky ... competed with the USA national team at a three-meet event in Italy in November, finishing third in the 50-meter backstroke (24.77) and seventh in the 100-meter backstroke (54.56) ... also placed ninth in the 200-meter back (2:04.48), third in the 50-meter butterfly (24.27) ... on the third leg of the even, took second in the 50-meter back (25.10) and third in the 100-meter medley (56.91) ... ninth in 200 IM at Hoosierland Invitational ... led the 200 medley relay team to victory (1:29.61) and took first in the 100 back (50.41)... fifth in the 400 IM (4:03.10), second in the 100 breaststroke (55.59) ... part of victorious 200 medley relay team in double dual with Texas and Michigan ... won the 100 backstroke (47.75) and 200 backstroke (1:44.73) ... won the 400 medley relay (3:18.02), 100 backstroke (49.13), 200 backstroke (1:49.95) and 100 butterfly (47.89) in a dual meet victory at Northwestern ... opened the year with wins in the 400 medley relay, 200 butterfly (1:50.29), 200 backstroke (1:50.20) at Missouri.

    JUNIOR YEAR (2006-07)

    Earned first team All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke and honorable mention accolades in both medley relays, bringing his career total to eight certificates ... finished second at the NCAA Championships in the 100 back with a school-record time of 45.45 ... took eighth in the 200 back to become the first IU swimmer since 1979 to reach the finals of two individual events at NCAAs ... set the school record in the 200 back in the preliminaries of the event ... helped the 200-yard medley relay to a ninth-place finish and the 400-yard medley relay to an 11th-place showing ... won the Big Ten championship in the 100 back, doing so in league-record time (45.52) ... earned All-Big Ten first team honors ... led Indiana with 24 event wins on the season ... was named CollegeSwimming.com's National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 1 ... went undefeated in the 100 back during the regular season ... had the Hoosiers' fastest times on the year in the 100 back, 200 back and four relays ... was also in the top five in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay ... owns the top 10 times in school history in the 100 back ... holds the school records in both medley relays ... placed third in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2007 U.S. National Championships, earning a spot on the U.S. National Team.

    SOPHOMORE YEAR (2005-06)

    Tied for fourth in the 100 back at NCAAs ... claimed a trio of All-America certificates during NCAAs, including ninth-place finishes on both the 200 medley and 400 medley relays ... the ninth-place effort in the 400 medley was the best for IU since 1980 ... member of the school- and meet-record setting Big Ten champion 200-yard medley relay unit ... helped set the school record in the 400-yard medley relay with a second-place effort at Big Tens ... eclipsed the school record in the 100 back with his lead leg of 46.44 in the 400-yard medley ... claimed 14 event titles ... finished in the top three 25 times ... earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week once ... holds the top eight times in school history in the 100 back ... concluded season among IU's all-time top 20 in the 100 back (first), 200 back (fifth) and 100 fly (fifth) ... also found in IU's meter record book in the 100 LCM back (third), 200 LCM back (ninth) and 100 LCM fly (sixth).

    FRESHMAN YEAR (2004-05)

    Garnered CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week recognition for the week of Nov. 1 ... member of both the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay squads that cleared the B-cut standard ... won 14 titles ... strung together three consecutive titles at the Evansville meet ... competed in every meet for IU ... earned All-American honors by advancing the 200-yard medley to finals ... finished in the points in four events at Big Tens.

    PREP/PERSONAL

    Won three-straight Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state championships in the 100-yard backstroke from 2002-04 ... was a 2002, 2003 and 2004 NISCA All-American in the 100 backstroke ... was regarded as one of the nation's top high school backstrokers in his class ... was also a NISCA All-American in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke ... also captured a state championship in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2004 IHSAA State Championships ... earned NISCA All-America consideration in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay ... finished ninth in the 200-yard IM at the IHSAA meet in 2003 ... also swam the leadoff, backstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay for Jeffersonville that placed 10th at the 2003 meet ... placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2002 IHSAA meet ... led off the 200-yard medley relay that took 11th in 2002 at the IHSAA meet ... swam club for Pacesetter, coached by Keith Gast ... son of Cheryl and Ben Hesen.
