MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Lindsay Vrooman took home a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle and the 400 medley relay took ninth to highlight the Hoosiers' day one at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

Indiana is currently in 12th place with 33 points.

In a stacked field Vrooman took fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:36.06. That is the second-fastest time in school history, giving Vrooman the top four times all-time and six of the seven top times. The field was so fast, it took an NCAA record to win the event as Georgia's Brittany MacLean out-touched Olympic Gold Medalist Missy Franklin of Cal, 4:32.53 to 4:32.66.

That is Vrooman's third top-eight finish at the NCAA Championships in the 500 free. She was eighth in 2012 and fifth in 2013. As a freshman in 2011 she placed 26th.

Vrooman qualified fifth for the championship final after a morning swim of 4:36.42. That is the fourth-fastest time in IU history.

In the 400 medley relay final, Brooklynn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Gia Dalesandro and Kait Flederbach led IU to victory in the consolation final, posting a time of 3:30.56 for ninth overall. That is the second-fastest time in IU history, just off their Big Ten record of 3:30.30 set at last month's NCAA Championships.

Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Dalesandro and Flederbach put up a time of 3:31.57 in prelims, the fourth-fastest time in IU history.

It was an exciting start to the morning as Snodgrass, Flederbach, Stephanie Armstrong and Cynthia Pammett raced to a time of 1:29.56 in the 200 freestyle relay prelims. That is the second-fastest time in Indiana history but left them in a tie with San Diego State for the 16th and final spot in the consolation final.

In the 200 free relay swim off, IU went with a lineup of Flederbach, Armstrong, Snodgrass and Justine Ress, but took second with a time of 1:29.59. That is the third-fastest time in IU history but leaves them 17th in the overall standings.

Dorina Szekeres finished in 2:00.08 in the 200 individual medley, placing her 50th in the field. Flederbach was scheduled to swim the prelims of the 50 freestyle but scratched in order to concentrate on the 400 medley relay and 200 free relay swim off.

In women's 1-meter springboard competition, senior Kate Hillman finished 23rd with a score of 262.80.

Competition continues Friday with the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving.
