Hoosiers Excel at the IU Doubles Invitational
The 2008 Indiana Doubles Invitational came to a close early Sunday afternoon, and the Hoosiers remained on top of the overall team records after winning 16 of their 20 matches on the weekend.
"This is exactly what we were looking for," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We played lots of doubles matches, allowing us to get ready for the dual match season."
The tandem of Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey picked up two more wins on Sunday, completing a 5-0 weekend. They started the day with an 8-3 victory over Natalia Baez and Lauren Imre from Louisville. Then in their fifth and final match, Fischer and Stuckey added an exclamation point with an 8-1 triumph over Ball State's Emma Retter and Georgina Thomson.
Maria Guerreiro and Brianna Williams won both of their Sunday matches as well, finishing 4-1 in the invitational. They were not the only Hoosier duo to win four of five matches, however, as Alba Berdala and Katya Zapadalova defeated Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack (Ball State) in their last match for their fourth victory of the weekend.
The Hoosiers will remain in Bloomington next Sunday to host a pair Mid American Conference foes, Western Michigan and Miami (OH).
"This weekend has prepared us for next week and the start of dual match play," said Loring. "Western Michigan always has tough doubles teams and always play us tough. We needed a weekend like this."
