BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team defeated Miami (Ohio), 7-0, and Western Michigan, 5-2, to begin the dual match season 2-0.

"I was very pleased with our singles play," head coach Lin Loring said. "We got off to a quick start, winning all six sets against Miami. Going into the match with Western Michigan, we knew that the match could have gone either way. Western Michigan had a tough match with Indiana State in the morning, and I think that we had a competitive advantage there."

Indiana wasted no time defeating Miami. Only one match went into three sets, as freshman Lindsey Stuckey defeated Jessica Linden, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (8). Notable in the morning match was senior Laura McGaffigan, who beat Kelly Douple, 6-0, 6-2.

Against Western Michigan in the afternoon, the Hoosiers bounced back in singles after losing the doubles point. Sophomore Alba Berdala, sophomore Sigrid Fischer, senior Cecile Perton and freshman Lindsey Stuckey each defeated their Bronco foe to clinch the victory for Indiana.

The final two singles matches went into three sets. McGaffigan and Kerstin Pahl fought hard in the second and third sets, with Pahl besting McGaffigan in the final points, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8). Junior Brianna Williams bounced back from a second set loss to earn a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10), win against Milica Zivanovic.

Berdala, who is ranked at No. 86 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, defeated Miami's Katrina Lomidze in the morning at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. She quickly disposed of Western Michigan's Noriko Saruta 6-0, 6-0, in the afternoon at No. 2 singles.

Indiana is ranked 43rd in the first ITA team poll of the season.

The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Kansas. Action begins at 9 a.m. Indiana will also play Drake in the afternoon.
