#30 Indiana Nabs Two Sweeps on Sunday
Jan. 25, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #30 Indiana University women's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of 7-0 victories on Sunday (Jan. 25). The Hoosiers swept both Marquette and Ball State in the doubleheader.
It marked the second of three consecutive Sunday home doubleheaders to start the spring season. Indiana defeated Western Michigan and Miami (OH) by a score of 4-3 in each contest last weekend.
"The Marquette match was similar to our first two," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We won all the close matches, winning three tiebreakers in singles. The 7-0 score is very deceiving. Marquette is a much improved team."
The doubles point was highly-competitive against Marquette with IU squeaking out all three matches to earn the doubles point. Indiana tandems of Alba Berdala/Katya Zapdalova and Megan Matter/Lindsey Stuckey each posted 8-6 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 triumph in the No. 2 slot.
"We experimented with our doubles teams today," said Loring. "That will give us more options for doubles combinations in the future."
Five of the six singles matches went in favor of Indiana in straight sets. Stuckey's match was extended to a third set, but the Greensboro, N.C. native wasted little time finishing off her opposition via a 6-0 third set to complete the 7-0 IU team victory.
No.1- Berdala/Zapadalova (IU) def. Calderon/Moore (MU), 8-6
No. 2- Fischer/Sopel (IU) def. Metzler/Ruiz (MU), 8-5

Indiana cruised through the second match of the day, starting by winning the doubles action by a combined score of 24-3 (8-1, 8-2, and 8-0). Singles play was much the same for the Hoosiers with each player winning in straight sets.
Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin both improved to 4-0 in dual match singles. Fischer was leading 6-2, 3-0 when her foe retired from the match while Martin downed Dena Boulieris, 6-1, 6-1 in the second singles match. Matter also remains unbeaten in dual match singles. The freshman is 3-0 after sitting out of the singles line-up against Ball State. Senior Stephanie Heller earned a start against the Cardinals, and responded with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Rachel Surowiec.
