Tack On Two More W's for IU Women's Tennis
Jan. 30, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis has won sixth consecutive dual matches to begin the spring season 6-0. Indiana tallied wins over Marquette (3-1) and Cincinnati (0-3) in a Saturday doubleheader.
In the first match of the day, the Hoosiers handed Marquette their first loss of the season with a 6-1 victory. Following a sweep of the doubles action, Indiana won five of six singles contests. Each IU victory came in straight sets. The Hoosiers then cruised past Cincinnati in the night cap, posting a 7-0 sweep of the Bearcats.
"Marquette may have been our best overall team performance of the season," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We played steady from top to bottom and kept our concentration."
Evgeniya Vertesheva and Leslie Hureau each recorded their team-leading 16th and 17th singles wins of the season. Vertesheva dropped a total of just six games in four sets played while Hureau capped off her day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Safiyya Ismail.
The Hoosiers won each of the doubles matches against Cincinnati by the same tally, 8-2. Indiana then pounded the Bearcats in singles play, dropping a combined 13 games in 12 sets played.
"We knew Cincinnati would be the weaker of the two teams," said Loring. "Although we were a little tired from the morning match, we talked about not letting the level of our play drop. We did a very good job of not letting them into the match."
