Indiana Falls to #9 Duke
Feb. 6, 2009
DURHAM, N.C. - The #30 Indiana University women's tennis team (6-1) suffered their first setback of the season on Friday, dropping a 7-0 decision to #9 Duke (4-0). The Hoosiers had begun the season by sweeping each of the first three home doubleheaders.
"Duke was preseason number nine, but since that time they added the number one recruit in the country in January," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "They are probably top-four right now and they showed why."
Duke won each of the three doubles match to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 advantage on the team scoreboard. Indiana's Alba Berdala and Katya Zapadalova notched three games against the nation's 20th ranked doubles team of Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang at No. 1 doubles.
Indiana couldn't stop the Blue Devils' momentum in singles play as Duke won all six in straight sets with three individuals nationally-ranked in the top-60. In the No. 1 singles match, Zapdalova challenged Mallory Cecil in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat. Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey also had a couple of close calls, dropping tight second sets.
"The match was closer than the score indicates because in doubles and singles we consistently got the games to 40-40 but could never win," said Loring. "Their pace and placement would eventually win the big points. Once the score got to 40-40, they played at a different level."
The Hoosiers will remain in Durham for the night to take on the Princeton Tigers Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Duke.
