Hoosiers Fall to No. 7 North Carolina
Feb. 11, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team dropped its second straight match to a top 10 team, falling 7-0 to No. 7 North Carolina.
"I thought we played well again today in doubles," head coach Lin Loring said. "We were two points away from winning at No. 1 doubles, which I am very pleased about. Considering North Carolina swept the doubles point against No. 1 Georgia Tech, this was a good doubles match for us.
"In singles, we were competitive at every position. It is our goal to play at this level all the time, especially when we get into some of the top Big Ten teams, but overall we played some of our best tennis this weekend."
In doubles, the duo of senior Laura McGaffigan and sophomore Alba Berdala at No. 1 fell, 8-6, to No. 16 Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen. Indiana was also competitive at No. 2 doubles, as senior Cecile Perton and sophomore Sigrid Fischer were defeated, 8-5, by No. 24 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand.
McGaffigan was also strong in singles, taking No. 33 Austin Smith to three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (4), at No. 2. Perton dropped her first singles match of the year to Collins at No. 5, 6-4, 7-5.
Other notables include Fischer at No. 3 singles, falling, 6-3, 6-4, to No. 19 Katrina Tsang.
Indiana, ranked at No. 38 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fila Collegiate Rankings, returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, as it takes on No. 18 Wake Forest in Bloomington at 10 am.
