DePaul Gets by Indiana, 4-3
Feb. 14, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's tennis team (7-2) dropped a 4-3 decision to DePaul (7-2) on Saturday. Indiana seized the doubles point, but won just two singles matches.
"Overall, we competed well today," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Today was a really good college tennis match."
Indiana received wins from their second and third doubles teams. The Hoosier duo of Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel clinched the doubles point by defeating a nationally-ranked opponent. Fischer/Sopel topped #36 Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell by an 8-5 tally. Megan Matter and Lindsey Stuckey posted the first IU doubles victory, disposing of Gia McKnight and Sandra Zmak, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
"I was very pleased with our doubles play," said Loring. "That was probably the best doubles we've played all year."
Senior captains Alba Berdala and Sigrid Fischer both ended their singles matches as winners, but they each took a different path to get to the `W.' Berdala quickly cruised past Zmak, 6-1, 6-2, while Fischer had the longest match of the day in outlasting Selma Salkovic for a three-set triumph. Following a tiebreaker defeat in the opening set, Fischer took control and finished off the contest, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2, and improved to 8-1 in dual-match singles.
"The difference today was the close (singles) matches," said Loring. "This is the first time this year in which we didn't win the close ones, losing two of three three-setters."
