Hoosiers Fall to No 10 Tennessee, 5-2
Feb. 17, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team's seven-match winning streak came to an end on Friday afternoon as No. 10 Tennessee topped the Hoosiers, 5-2.
In doubles, Tennessee won at No. 2, 8-1, to begin the match. The Hoosiers evened things up as Leslie Hureau and Alecia Kauss cruised to a win at No. 3, 8-2. At No. 1, Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek were tied a 3-3 with the nationally second-ranked combo of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti from Tennessee early on. The Lady Vol duo went on to take five of the final six games to win, 8-4, and clinch the doubles point.
The Lady Vols continued their fine play in singles, as IU's Chupa fell to Tennessee's Toti at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2, No. 37 Kata Szekely topped Indiana's Evgeniya Vertesheva in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-1. Caitlyn Williams clinched the match for Tennessee with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over IU's Klyczek. The Lady Vols also picked up a win No. 1 as No. 34 Brynn Boren topped Leslie Hureau, 6-2, 6-3.
The Hoosiers picked up their points at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Alecia Kauss won in the No. 5 spot over Joanna Henderson in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2. Then to wrap up the day at No. 6, Kayla Fujimoto outlasted Jesse Grace, 7-5, 6-2.
"We had some good individual performances, but overall it was a disappointing match," head coach Lin Loring said. "We beat ourselves at too many positions. They are No. 10 for a reason, but we should have been more competitive as a team.
The Hoosiers will play again on Sunday, Feb. 19, as No. 71 DePaul visits Bloomington. That match will begin at 11 a.m. ET.
Order of finish: Doubles (2,3,1); Singles (5,1,3,4,2,6)
