    Hoosiers Split Matches with No. 27 Tennessee and Ball State

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 37 Indiana women's tennis team fell just short to No. 27 Tennessee, 4-3, before knocking off Ball State, 4-0, at the IU Tennis Center on Sunday.

    Against Tennessee, the Hoosiers jumped out to 1-0 lead when the IU doubles tandems of Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy (No. 3) along with Katie Klyczek and Carolyn Chupa (No. 1) picked up wins to clinch the doubles point.

    In singles, Tennessee's Brittany Lindl evened the match by topping IU's Paula Gutierrez in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 6-1. Tiffany Tavares gave UT its first advantage of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Murdy at No. 6.

    Moments later, Indiana's Garre made it a 2-2 team score by winning in straight sets in the No. 3 match over Tennessee's Laurence Guevremont, 6-2, 6-2. Kauss then put IU back on top as she downed Victoria Olivarez, 6-4, 6-3.

    Eve Repic of Tennessee held off Indiana's Klyczek in the No. 1 spot with a 6-4, 6-4 win to make the team tally even again at 3-3.

    All eyes then turned to the No. 2 match where Indiana's Chupa was matched up with Joanna Henderson of the Lady Vols. Henderson took the first set by a 6-4 margin before Chupa rebounded to win 6-3 in the second set. In the third and deciding set, Henderson jumped ahead 4-1, but Chupa responded winning three of the next four games to make it a 5-4 tally. Henderson would go on to hold off Chupa to win the final game to take the match and clinch the win for the Lady Vols.

    In the second match of the day against Ball State, Klyczek and Chupa won 8-1 at No. 1 and Garre and Kayla Fujimoto picked up a win at No. 2 in doubles to take the point.

     

     

    In singles, IU's Gutierrez defeated BSU's Toni Ormond at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Kauss followed suite cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kirstel Sanders in the No. 3 match. Murdy then clinched match for the Hoosiers as she took down Ball State's Ayaka Terashi, 6-2, 6-2. The remaining matches went unfinished.

    The Hoosiers will next take to the courts on Saturday, March 1 in a double-header with Marshall and Morehead State at the IU Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
