Feb. 26, 2011
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Indiana women's tennis topped Kentucky in Lexington on Saturday, 4-3. The No. 37 Hoosiers improved to 10-2 on the season with the victory.
Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva teamed to pick up IU's first win in doubles on the day at No. 2, 8-2. Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers with an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
Kentucky made things interesting in singles as Caitlin McGraw picked up a No. 3 win over IU's Katya Zapadalova in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Charlotte Martin bounced back for the Hoosiers with a win in No. 4 singles in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Wildcats then countered to make the match even again with Jessica Stiles earning a No. 2 win over Vertesheva, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1.
With match in a dead tie at 2-2, Megan Broderick gave UK some momentum with a win over Hureau at No. 1. That left the match in the hands of Indiana's Fujimoto playing at No. 5 and Sopel playing the No. 6 singles match. Both players stepped up and earned straight set wins over UK to clinch the 4-3 win for Indiana.
"This was a great team win. We won with doubles and the bottom of our lineup, which is something different for us" IU Head Coach Lin Loring said. "Anytime you can beat an SEC team on the road, it's a very good win. The Tennessee match got us ready for this because the courts today were slow like theirs. We competed really well today. Even the players that lost made it a battle."
Indiana will return home for matchup with Notre Dame on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET before beginning Big Ten match play the following weekend.
