Feb. 26, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team topped Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center, 5-2. The Hoosiers rebounded after a tough road loss on Friday.
The day began with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position for Indiana. Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva won at No. 2 as Leslie Hureau and Alecia Kauss won at No. 3 to give IU the doubles point.
In singles play, Hureau made quick work of UK's Caitlin McGraw in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Kayla Fujimoto followed at No. 6 with a similar result of 6-2, 6-2 over Marni Witten to give IU its third team point. Katie Klyczek, playing in the No. 3 spot, then clinched the match for the Hoosiers with her 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Kentucky's Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff. Carolyn Chupa scored IU's final point of the day with a thrilling 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (14-12) win in the No. 4 position.
"This was a good win for us, it is always great when we can beat Kentucky in any sport," head coach Lin Loring said. "It was especially good because it was a complete team effort at every position. The matches we did lose, we lost in tiebreakers and three sets. We gave up no easy points today. When we do that we are hard to beat."
Indiana will play next on Sunday, March 4, in Bloomington. The Hoosiers will welcome Marquette at 11 a.m. ET and will then take on Cleveland State to cap the double-header at 4 p.m. ET.
