Indiana Downs Indiana State, 5-2
March 4, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- With a 5-2 victory over Indiana State on Sunday, March 4, the Indiana women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of its dual matches. The Hoosiers beat Wisconsin, 7-0, on Saturday, March 3.
Indiana (11-3) won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Alba Berdala and Laura McGaffigan defeated Indiana State's Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5). Cecile Perton and Sigrid Fischer easily won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, over Ariane Masschelein and Marie Caujolle. No. 3 doubles saw Stephanie Heller and Brianna Williams earn a hard-fought 8-6 win over Fadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Galparoli.
"This is very similar to the Wisconsin match in that the doubles point was pretty dramatic all the way to the end, then we had two really close singles matches," head coach Lin Loring said. "This was a good win because this is a team that certainly could have beaten us if we didn't play well. They exposed some weaknesses in our doubles game and showed us some things we need to work on, so hopefully we'll learn from this match."
Four players won in singles, led by McGaffigan at No. 2. She earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Masschelein. Fischer won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Perton was victorious at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0 over Masiyazi. Lindsey Stuckey downed Cajolle at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Williams fell in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (6) to Galparoli. Berdala was defeated at No. 1 singles after a tough first set, 7-6, 6-1, by Migan.
Indiana travels to the Las Vegas Invitational to face Syracuse, March 11-13, during the week of spring break.
