BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-The #28 Indiana University women's tennis team (10-5, 0-2) fell to the #44 Illinois Fighting Illini (6-6, 1-1) Friday afternoon by a 6-1 tally. Sophomore Evgeniya Vertesheva won the sole singles match for the Hoosiers.

"At the beginning of the season we knew this match was a toss-up," said IU coach Lin Loring. "When we started having all the injury and illness we entered this match as underdogs. We would have had to play perfect tennis to beat them with the line-up we put out on the court today."

In singles play, Vertesheva matched up against Rachael White, who is ranked No. 94 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Vertesheva won her first set 6-4, and then dominated the second set 6-0, to claim a point for IU. It is her 20th singles win of the year and the 31st of her career.

Another Hoosier that fought hard was junior Myriam Sopel. After going down 2-6 in her first set, Sopel came back. She led the second set 5-4, before Illinois' Marisa Lambropoulos forced a tie breaker at 6-6. In a see-saw battle Sopel came up short 5-7.

Freshman Leslie Hureau dropped her first set 3-6, but was leading the second set 3-2 before she was forced to retire. Hureau, ranked No. 101 nationally in singles, moved to 19-8 on the year.

"We now have two weeks before our next Big Ten match," Loring said. "Hopefully we can get Leslie and Katya healthy. It will also be two more weeks for Charlotte to play and get time on the court. I'm hoping by the first week in April we may actually have what I though would be our starting line-up on the court for the first time this season."

Up next the Hoosiers travel to Orlando, Fla., for their Spring Break trip, Mar.14-20.
