Indiana Women's Tennis Falls in Tough One to Purdue, 4-3
March 12, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 47 Indiana led early, but No. 57 Purdue rallied winning the final three singles matches of the day to pick up the 4-3 win in West Lafayette on Saturday in the opening weekend of Big Ten play.
Indiana began the day with a dominating No. 2 doubles win by Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 8-2. Purdue evened the doubles portion of the match with a No. 3 victory before IU's Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers with a come from behind 9-7 victory playing in the No. 1 match over the 18th-ranked combo of Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt of Purdue.
In singles, the Boilermakers tied the team score as Fujimoto fell in the No. 5 match to Imogen Golder, 6-3, 6-0. Vertesheva and Hureau rebounded for IU collecting straight set victories playing No. 2 and No. 1, respectively, to make it a 3-1 Hoosier lead half way through singles play.
Purdue came right back into the match picking up a victory in the No. 3 match as Bhavani Tirumurti defeated IU's Katya Zapadalova using a second set tiebreaker to do so, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The Boilers then evened the team score as Charlotte Martin fell in the No. 4 spot.
With the team score knotted at 3-3, it all came down to the No. 6 singles match as Sopel was matched up against Purdue's Gisella Pere. Pere took the first set then in the second set, the two players traded games back-and-forth. Sopel trailed, 6-5, and fought back to tie the set before falling in the tiebreaker with the final match tally of 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
"It was a tough loss for us but a very entertaining college match," Indiana Head Coach Lin Loring said. "We had the momentum after the doubles when we came back from a 6-3 deficit to win the No. 1 match to take the doubles point. But Purdue did a great job of coming back in the singles."
Indiana will head to Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the Las Vegas Invitational during spring break next week.
