March 24, 2012
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 57 Indiana women's tennis teame topped No. 46 Penn State on Friday, 6-1. The Hoosiers won their first Big Ten match of the season on the road in State College.
IU (12-4, 1-1) began the match sweeping the doubles portion to take the lead right from the start.
In singles, Carolyn Chupa started things for Indiana at No. 4 with a straight-set victory before Alecia Kauss followed with a win at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Katie Klyczek clinched the match for the Hoosiers with another consecutive set win in the No. 3 position, 6-2, 7-5.
"It was a beautiful summer-like day and we got to play our first outdoor match of the season," head coach Lin Loring said. "This was a good conference road win for us. They are ranked ahead of us and we need road wins against ranked teams if we are going to get into the NCAA Tournament."
"We swept the doubles, something we haven't done against a good team this season," Loring said. "Then we followed that up by taking five of the first sets in singles. I was really pleased we did not lose the momentum after the doubles."
Indiana will now travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes on Sunday, March 25. That match will begin at 11 a.m. ET.
