No. 57 Hoosiers Win Second Straight over Ranked Opponent
March 25, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 57 Indiana women's tennis team edged No. 66 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon on the road, 4-3. It marked IU's second-consecutive win over a ranked opponent on the weekend after dropping No. 46 Penn State on Friday.
The match began with IU (13-4, 2-1) clinching the doubles point over OSU (5-11, 0-3) with two wins out of the gate. Shannon Murdy and Leslie Hureau won in the No. 3 match before Katie Klyczek and Sophie Garre earned a victory at No. 1 to claim doubles.
"Our first and third doubles played almost perfect tennis and got us the doubles point and the momentum to start," head coach Lin Loring said.
In singles, the Buckeyes evened the match winning at No. 3. The Hoosiers then took a 2-1 advantage with Kayla Fujimoto's triumph over Ohio State's Noelle Malley, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 6 match. OSU once again evened the score with a No. 5 victory.
The Hoosiers then seized momentum for the rest of the match with Hureau's straight-set No. 1 win over Kara Cecil, 6-3, 6-3. IU senior Evgeniya Vertesheva then closed the door on the Buckeyes for good, topping Ohio State's Kesley Haviland in the No. 2 position, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
"This was a great weekend for our program. We got two ranked wins on the road in the conference," Loring said. "About an hour into the singles we had to go indoors and we went from winning on four courts to losing on four courts. I was really proud of the way we fought back to take the momentum and the match. It was a great college tennis match."
Indiana will return home on Saturday, March 31, to take on Michigan State. That match will begin at 11 a.m. ET in Bloomington.
