Hoosiers Fall to #3 Fighting Irish
March 26, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 3 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame paid a visit to the #35 Hoosiers on Thursday, and they weren't kind guests. The Irish won 7-0, taking all but one match in straight sets.
"This was Notre Dame's fifth outdoor match and our first," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Combined with their #3 national ranking, we were overmatched today."
Sophomore Myriam Sopel lost a heartbreaker at number six singles. After dropping the first set 6-4, Sopel battled back for a 7-5 win in the second set. Then in a ten-point third-set tiebreaker, she got out to a 6-5 lead, yet Kali Krisik was able to take five of the next six points for the win.
"The good news is that we were able to play outdoors, which should help us the rest of the season," said Loring. "And although the scores don't show it, we had several close matches today. Number two doubles, for example, had eight games go to deuce and we only won one of them. We had several singles matches that were similar."
The Hoosiers return to action on March 28, when they visit the rival Purdue Boilermakers. For complete coverage of IU tennis, stay tuned to www.IUHoosiers.com.
