Indiana Topped by Michigan State, 4-3
March 27, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana fell in another tough one at Michigan State on Sunday, 4-3. Three Hoosiers picked up singles wins and the IU doubles pair of Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Spartans captured the doubles point right out of the gate with a pair of 8-6 victories in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches before Hureau and Sopel picked up their win.
With Indiana trailing, 2-0, Kayla Fujimoto picked up IU's first point of the day with a straight set triumph over Michaela Silesova in the No. 5 singles match. Charlotte Martin followed with a win playing in the No. 4 spot to tie the match at 2-2.
Valentina Rusakova of MSU regained control for the Spartans as Katya Zapadalova took Rusakova to a second set tiebreaker before falling in the No. 3 match. Hureau went the distance in the No. 1 match, but fell on the short end of that one as Amy Barton of Michigan State clinched the match for the Spartans with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win. Sopel ended the day with a No. 6 singles win as her match was retired as she led in the third and final set.
"That's another 4-3 heartbreaker for us on the road," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "Unfortunately we open with five Big Ten matches on the road and the home court is good for at least one point a match. So it isn't going to get any easier for us. We are having trouble getting consistency out of any position. We have yet to have everyone play up to their ability on the road. We are a good team when we all show up healthy and ready to play."
Indiana will hit the road again next weekend for a pair of matches beginning at Iowa on Saturday, April 2 followed by a stop in Champaign, Ill., to battle the Illini on Sunday, April 3. Both matches are set to begin at Noon ET.
