Hawkeyes Get By IU, 4-3
April 2, 2011
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Indiana women's tennis team fell to Iowa, 4-3, in Iowa City on Saturday. The loss dropped the Hoosiers to 10-7 on the season and 0-4 in Big Ten play.
"This was the same story line as our other 4-3 losses" said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We put ourselves in a position to win and couldn't get it done. We are probably 8 points away from starting 3-1 on the road in the conference, instead we are 0-4."
Katya Zapadalova and Sophie Garre won the first doubles match of the day, 8-6, playing in the No. 3 spot. The duo of Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva won at second doubles, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for the Hoosiers. Myriam Sopel and Leslie Hureau were defeated 8-7 in No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, the Hawkeyes took the first four match points to secure the win. Zapadalova held off Iowa's Lynne Poggensee-Wei 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the No.3 singles to give the Hoosiers a point. Sopel also took her opponent, Cassandra Escobar, to three sets before winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
"We fought really hard to win the doubles points, but couldn't quite get it done in the singles. It has been one or the other in these first four matches on the road. The last two years we always found a way to win the 4-3 matches, this year we haven't. I don't know how to explain it."
The Hoosiers will look to rebound against Illinois when they take on the Fighting Illini Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET in Champaign.
