Indiana Pounds Badgers, 7-0
April 5, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #27 Indiana University women's tennis team remains unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 (16-4 overall) after a 7-0 sweep at Wisconsin. The win sets up a battle between the Big Ten's top two squads on Sunday when the Hoosiers travel to #1 Northwestern.
"I am extremely pleased with our performance today," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "It was only our second outdoor match and it was extremely windy. We were losing on five of the six singles courts a half hour into the match. Once we got used to the wind and made adjustments, we played well. It was a much tougher match than the score indicates."
Indian's Alba Berdala and Lindsey Stuckey posted an 8-4 victory in the second doubles match while the No. 1 doubles match went in favor of the Badgers. Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel came through for the Cream and Crimson in the third doubles bout, topping their competition, 8-6, and assuring the team doubles point. It marked Sopel's 16th straight doubles win.
Fischer was the quickest to finish off her opponent in singles play, taking out Chelsea Nusslock, 6-3, 6-0. Stuckey and Berdala were not just doubles partners on Saturday, but also tallied exact same singles scores by each winning 6-4, 6-4.
Freshmen Charlotte Martin and Katya Zapadalova also contributed straight-set wins for the Hoosiers. Martin was a 6-3, 6-3 winner and Zapadalova seized a 6-2, 7-6 (1) success in the third and second singles flights, respectively.
Senior captain Brianna Williams struggled in her opening set before bouncing back for a three-set win. With the "W," the Tampa, Florida native improves to 27-5 overall and 18-2 in dual matches.
As mentioned above, Indiana's next match is scheduled for Sunday at noon eastern time at #1 Northwestern
