Top-Ranked Northwestern Downs Hoosiers, 6-1
April 6, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Charlotte Martin and Indiana's first doubles team each earned victories over nationally-ranked foes in the Hoosiers' 6-1 loss at #1 Northwestern on Sunday.
"Number one Northwestern just beat number two Baylor, 6-1, at Baylor," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "So we don't feel to bad about the score today. We had two very nice wins today, at number one doubles and number three singles."
Senior captain Brianna Williams and freshman Katya Zapadalova posted an 8-7 win over Lauren Lui and Sam Murray, the 13th-ranked doubles tandem in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's latest rankings. Williams and Zapadalova improve to 12-4 overall when teamed together. Northwestern won the other two doubles contests, however, to earn the team doubles point. Myriam Sopel saw her doubles winning streak of 16 consecutive matches finally come to end as she and Sigird Fischer fell, 8-2, in the third doubles match.
Martin, a native of England, notched a huge win in her singles contest versus #25 Sam Murray. She began by taking a first-set tiebreaker before dropping the second set, 6-1. With the team score already determined, the third and final set was determined by a 10-point tiebreaker; and it was Martin coming out on top once again in a tiebreaker. Martin improves 16-5 in dual matches, including a 4-2 mark in the Big Ten.
"Charlotte had a great win over a nationally ranked player and I think that will give her a lot of confidence the rest of the season," said Loring.
